Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Eureka California
345 am PST Monday Nov 23 2009

Synopsis...high pressure will yield dry weather today through
Wednesday. A storm system will approach the region late on
Thanksgiving day and into Friday...bringing the threat for rain and
higher elevation snow. Dry weather is expected to return for next
weekend.

&&

Discussion...no major weather considerations in the Short Run with
the next storm system slated for late Thanksgiving day and Friday.

Early morning weather Roundup features weak ridging aloft with
offshore flow near the surface providing only a few passing high
clouds. Good radiational escape has allowed temperatures along the coast to
fall into the middle to upper 30s at press time and we'll probably lose
a couple of more degrees between now and sunrise so a frost advisory
was hoisted until 9 am PST. Otherwise...fair conditions are expected
today once Interior Valley fog Burns off late this morning. Little
change to the overall pattern expected tonight into Wednesday as
high pressure keeps the storm track well to the north. Models remain
quite consistent on the next system approaching the region on
Thanksgiving day. Current indications suggest this won't be a long
duration storm...but the exact strength and track are still up for
debate at this point. Free-air snow levels appear to remain Above
All major passes so no winter weather travel difficulties are
expected for Holiday travelers...but some non-accumulating snow may
mix in with rain at pass level as colder air filters in behind the
departing storm early Friday. The highest precipitation amounts look
to be targeted near the Oregon border down to Cape Mendocino where
an inch or two of rain is possible. Ridging is expected to fill in
behind this system so a return to drier weather is anticipated for
next weekend. Burger

Marine...buoy observations this morning show the northwest swell
slowly subsiding. The Small Craft Advisory for hazardous seas will remain up for a
few more hours. Expect light winds and seas under 10 feet across the
waters this afternoon. A longer period northwest swell near 10 feet
will move through the waters tonight, probably bringing a return of
Small Craft Advisory conditions. Winds will remain light through Wednesday due to a
weak pressure gradient across the region. Seas will also remain at
or just under 10 feet Tuesday and Wednesday. A storm will bring higher
winds and a large northwest swell towards the end of the week. Stroz

&&

Aviation...light offshore winds are bringing VFR to all taf sites
this morning. A weak pressure gradient will continue to bring
generally light winds to the taf sites today. VFR are expected to
prevail this afternoon. Stroz

Radar...note to users...the weather forecast office Eureka weather surveillance radar
kbhx failed at 0307 PST /1107 UTC/ this morning. Electronics
technicians will attempt to resolve the problem later today. A
return to service time has not yet been established.
