Area forecast discussion

Discussion...as of 2:45 PM PDT Sunday...a strong marine push is 
underway and temperatures are down sharply near the coast and around 
sf Bay compared to yesterday afternoon. At 2 PM temperatures in those 
areas were running 10 to 20 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Strong 
cooling was also occurring in the North Bay valleys. The only places 
that remain hot are the hills and valleys well inland. The 2 PM 
temperature of 98 degrees at the Livermore Airport was only 1 degree 
cooler than yesterday. 


Cooler weather will develop in all areas tomorrow and Tuesday as 
moderate onshore flow persists and the marine layer deepens. In 
addition...the airmass aloft will cool as a weak upper trough 
gradually digs along the West Coast. Temperatures early this week 
will return to normal for inland areas...and drop a bit below normal 
near the coast and in the coastal valleys. 


A modest warming trend is forecast for the second half of the week 
as the trough settles to our southeast and onshore flow weakens. 
But no major heatwaves or strong offshore wind events are forecast 
through at least the next 7 days.

Aviation...as of 4:30 PM PDT Sunday...extensive stratus right off 
the coast. Oak sounding shows a very shallow marine layer which 
will keep stratus out of sfo and Oak until around 06z. Stratus will 
spread over the entire sfo Bay area including sjc and sts overnight. 
Sustained winds to 20 knots with gusts as high as 27 knots has been 
reported at sfo this afternoon and this should continue through 
around 04z. 


Stratus over mry Bay expected to spread into mry 
by 04z and sns by 06z. However will need to monitor this as it could 
come into mry or sns sooner.
