Public Information Statement  Statement as of 2:59 am MST on November 19, 2008

... Today in Metro Denver weather history...

18-19 in 1975... snowfall totaled only 5.5 inches and north winds
gusted to 35 mph causing some blowing snow at Stapleton
International Airport... while a major blizzard struck
        southeastern Colorado.
In 1985... 4 to 7 inches of snow fell across Metro Denver.
Snowfall totaled 4.4 inches at Stapleton International
Airport where north winds gusted to 23 mph.
In 1991... another strong winter storm produced heavy snow
over Metro Denver. Snowfall totaled 9.5 inches at
Stapleton International Airport with 9 inches at Parker...
and 8 inches in southeast Denver... Morrison... and Wheat
Ridge. This second storm brought the 5 day (15th-19th)
snowfall total at Stapleton International Airport to
21.1 inches. The greatest depth of snow on the ground
was 13 inches on the morning of the 19th. The adverse
effects of the two storms were diminished by the lack
        of significant winds.
18-20 in 1930... a major storm dumped a total of 13.6 inches of
snowfall over downtown Denver. Most of the snow... 9.4
inches... fell on the 19th when north winds were sustained
to 23 mph. This was the only measurable snow of the
month. Temperatures hovered in the 20's and lower 30's.
In 1956... an intense winter storm dumped 12.8 inches of
snowfall on Metro Denver. Strong north-northeast winds
gusting to 33 mph at Stapleton Airport frequently reduced
the visibility to 1/2 mile in snow and blowing snow on the
19th. Most of the snowfall... 10.7 inches... occurred on the
        19th.
19 in 1931... the first measurable snow of the season totaled
only 1.0 inch in the city.
In 1977... near-blizzard conditions caused some traffic
accident injuries across Metro Denver. Only 1.3 inches
of snow fell at Stapleton International Airport where
northeast winds gusted to 28 mph.
19-21 in 1979... a heavy snowstorm buried most of Colorado under at
least a foot of snow. Snowfall at Stapleton International
Airport totaled 17.7 inches... the greatest snow depth since
1946. Winds to 60 mph produced 5-foot drifts paralyzing
the city as temperatures hovered in the 20's. While small
airports closed... Stapleton remained open... but with long
delays that snarled Thanksgiving Holiday traffic. Schools
and businesses closed and postal deliveries were delayed.
Almost all major highways leading out of Denver were closed
to traffic for periods of time on the 20th and 21st. Most
of the snow... 13.5 inches... fell on the 20th. At Stapleton
International Airport... north winds gusted to 35 mph on the
20th and to 38 mph on the 21st.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Denver Colorado
300 am MST Wednesday Nov 19 2008

Short term...surface cold front early this morning was moving right
along through the northern High Plains. Cold front is scheduled to
reach the northeast corner of colordado around 15-16z and then back
to Denver by 18z. Until then...we are starting the day quite mild
so expect a quick warmup and early day high ahead of the front.
Temperatures should steady out or slowly fall behind the front as
low level cold advection is rather strong.

By tonight...low clouds are expected to fill in as moist low level
upslope flow develops from the surface up to 9000 feet mean sea level. With
respect to drizzle and fog development overnight...I would like to
see more in the way of low level moisture behind the front at the
present time. Current ceilings behind the front are not that
impressive either. However...the easterly low level flow is
persistent through tonight so low levels should begin to saturate
toward daybreak Thursday. Forecast soundings show that if we do get
saturation...precipitation should be in the form of drizzle/freezing
drizzle as temperatures greater than -10c in the moist layer are conducive
to supercooled liquid water versus snow.

Long term...we are still on track for a brief winter interlude on
Thursday with moist upslope conditions across northeast Colorado.
The extent of freezing drizzle is a question early Thursday...but
will leave that in the forecast...then drizzle during the day as
temperatures go above freezing. As flow becomes southerly Thursday
night it does appear to dry out so another batch of freezing drizzle
looks less likely and have dropped precipitation.

Next trough moves quickly across Wyoming on Friday. The bulk of the
dynamics and lift appear to be north of US...but the trough will
pass close enough for some mountain snow showers in northern
Colorado. There is still a fair amount of disagreement in the
models with the main differences on whether a closed low develops vs
an open trough and how far south the track will be.

Another trough is foreast to dig across the northern rockies and
wind up in the upper Midwest on Monday. The main impact on US will
be another shot of cool air...but precipitation looks too far
north.

Heading towards Thanksgiving...an upper ridge will move from the
Great Basin on Monday and across The Rockies Tuesday with
southwesterly flow and moisture heading towards Colorado by
Wednesday. Have take out mountain snow showers Monday and Tuesday
as this period looks quite dry. Temperatures will also begin to
climb a bit Tuesday into Wednesday.

&&

Aviation...cold front is still on track to reach dia and the Front
Range airports around 18z today with easterly upslope flow behind
the front. VFR conditions until low cloud development after 06z-07z
tonight when airmass cools and moistens sufficiently. Ceilings should
start off MVFR with a gradual lowering to IFR toward 12z Thursday
morning. Light freezing drizzle and light fog with visibilitiies of
1-3 miles also a threat late tonight through the Thursday morning
rush. At this point...chance of visibilities 1/2 mile or less are
quite low as surface moisture behind the front is somewhat limited.
IFR/MVFR ceilings are expected to stick around through Thursday evening.

&&

Bou watches/warnings/advisories...none.
