Public Information Statement  Statement as of 10:35 PM EDT on August 19, 2008

... National Weather Service determined that microburst straight line
thunderstorm winds caused damage in Acushnet Massachusetts this
afternoon...

The National Weather Service investigated damage and interviewed
eyewitnesses to the storm that impacted Acushnet afternoon between
approximately 335 PM and 400 PM. The damage appears to have been
caused by a microburst/straight line winds from a thunderstorm. The
damage occurred along a path of around 2 and 3 quarters of a mile.
The width of the damage path was around a half a mile at its widest
point with the majority of the width just under a quarter of a mile.

The damage began approximately a half mile north of lake street on
the west side of the New Bedford Reservoir near Athol street in
Acushnet. A broken damage path extended to the south southeast
ending at Main Street just to the southwest of Perry Hill Road.
There were two main areas of concentrated damage. The first was in
the area of lake street between athols street to the north of lake
street to Mecca way on the south side of lake street. In this area
numerous trees were either blown over or snapped at a level between
8 and 14 feet above the ground. Near Athol street was a
concentration of White Pines that were snapped off approximately 15
feet above the ground. These Pine trees ranged in diameter from 12
to 20 inches. Along lake street itself numerous trees were blown
over with two houses in this area damaged due to trees being blown
into them. The damage in these areas were on the west side of the
New Bedford Reservoir.

Further to the south southeast damage along the path became more
spotty between the south end of New Bedford Reservoir... across
Leonard street to near the Acushnet River Valley Golf course.

The second area of concentrated damage was found on the west side of
Main Street just to the northwest of The Golf Course... in the area
of 800 north Main Street. Again in this area numerous Oak trees were
blown over or had large branches blown off. Also in this area were
several stands of White Pine trees between 30 and 45 feet tall. Most
of the trees in these stands were either blown over or were snapped
off at a level between 12 and 20 feet above the ground. Many of
these trees had diameters between 16 and 30 inches.

Several witnesses were interviewed during the course of this survey.
All witnesses reported the sky turning black with a brief period of
rain followed by very heavy hail. Several of The Witnesses stated
that they could only see 2 to 3 feet due to the intensity of the
hail. Witnesses reported hail size ranging from dime to Golf Ball
size. One witness reported that she did not hear any trees falling
in her yard because of the noise created by the falling hail... and
was shocked to see the damage in her yard. It was reported that hail
fell anywhere between half a minute to just over a minute before
very strong winds struck. Two witnesses reported that it took 2
people to be able to close doors to the outside.

Two witnesses on Leonard street did report seeing a funnel cloud to
their north moving south before they lost site of it due to the rain
and heavy hail. Despite the report of a funnel cloud all damage
viewed was indicative of very strong straight line winds. All fallen
trees and downed large branches along the path of damage were
pointing in the same direction... to the south southeast. Based on
the amount of tree damage... the size and apparent lack of any rot on
Pine trees that were snapped off above the ground it was estimated
that wind reached speeds of 80 to 100 mph at the two areas with the
most concentrated damage. Along the rest of the path where damage
was more isolated wind speeds were likely in the 45 to 60 mph range.

According to Acushnet emergency officials there were no injuries
reported as a result of this storm. Outside of the extensive tree
damage... three homes were damaged due to falling trees. Numerous
powerlines were taken down during the storm with large areas of east
side of Acushnet being without power.

Many thanks to the eyewitnesses... the Acushnet fire chief... the town
administrator... ham radio personnel and many others in the town of
Acushnet who helped in the performance of this damage survey.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Taunton Massachusetts
350 am EDT Wednesday Aug 20 2008

Synopsis...
a dry but fall-like airmass will be over the region today and
tonight...as Canadian high pressure crest over the area. The high
will remain anchored just offshore...providing dry weather along with
a gradual warming trend into this weekend. The next chance of showers
and thunderstorms will come late Sunday or early next week...as a
cold front enters the northeast.

&&

Near term /until 6 PM this evening/...

A beautiful day is on tap for southern New England with very
comfortable humidity levels for this time of year. Skies were clear
early this morning expect for a bit of ocean effect cloudiness from
Chatham to Nantucket. These clouds should dissipate a few hours
after sunrise.

Otherwise...mostly sunny skies are expected today with just some
scattered fair weather cumulus clouds developing during the
afternoon. Despite the cool start...the dry airmass in place should
warmup quickly. GFS MOS guidance looks reasonable with highs mainly
in the middle to upper 70s.

&&

Short term /6 PM this evening through 6 PM Thursday/...

Tonight...
a 1025 mb high pressure system builds into the region overnight. We
may see a batch of middle level cloudiness drop down overnight based on
700 mb relative humidity fields on the NAM/GFS. Certainly not a big
deal with maybe a few hours of partly cloudy skies. Light winds and
a dry airmass in place should allow for temperatures to drop quickly
after sunset. Overnight lows should range from the 40s across the
normally colder outlying locations...to the middle to upper 50s in the
urban centers of Boston and Providence.

Thursday...
another mostly sunny and beautiful day across the region. Warming
middle level temperatures should allow for high temperatures mainly in
the lower 80s...although sea breezes on the coast should keep it a
few degrees cooler at these locations.

&&

Long term /Thursday night through Tuesday/...

Quiet weather much of this period as deep layer ridge remains over
the northeast. Airmass gradual warms with highs climbing into the
low and middle 80s Friday and Sat...then upper 80s possible away from the
South Coast Sunday. Humidity will slowly increase as well...
especially Sunday as low level southwest flow increases.

00z models continue to show some spread regarding the timing of the
next middle level trough and associated cold front. 00z operational GFS
still slightly faster than remainder of the guidance...with the cold
front moving across the area Sun night into Monday morning. The 00z
ggem/European model (ecmwf) and the gefs are all a bit slower...indicating the
frontal passage may hold off until late Monday or early Tuesday.
Therefore...dry weather may persist into much of Monday. Although given
this time range and to allow some margin of error...we will continue
with chance of showers and thunderstorms from late sun into Monday.

Dry and cooler weather should arrive Tuesday as cold front moves
offshore.

&&

Aviation /08z Wednesday through Sunday/...

Today through Thursday...VFR.

Outlook /Thursday through Sunday/...

Thursday night through Saturday...VFR.

Sunday...mainly VFR. However...depending on the timing of an
approaching cold front could see some deterioration to
MVFR with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

&&

Marine...

Today...northwest wind gusts over the open ocean have diminished
below 25 knots. Therefore...will have no headlines over the waters
today although we still expect to see gusts to around 20 knots.

Tonight and Thursday...high pressure builds in so expect sustained
winds 10 knots or less with seas 1 to 3 feet.

Outlook...Thursday through Sunday...

Thursday night through Saturday...fine boating weather with large
high pressure just offshore. Wind and waves will not be an issue.
Could have some patchy late night/early morning fog. Otherwise...no
marine hazards.

Sunday...seas will build to 3-5 feet as southwest surface winds
increase to 15-20 knots. An approaching cold front may trigger
scattered showers/thunderstorms late sun and Sun night.
