NWS Forecaster Discussion
858 fxus61 kcar 281826 afdcar Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 226 PM EDT Thursday Aug 28 2008 Synopsis... high pressure will remain across the area today and tonight. The high will weaken on Friday as some moisture from low pressure off Nova Scotia pushes west into the region. Weak cold fronts will cross the area Saturday and again on Sunday. Warm high pressure will return for much of next week. && Near term /through Friday/... the high that brought sunny warm weather today will remain over the area tonight bringing mostly clear skies early. Moisture will then begin to press in from the deep low pressure system south of Nova Scotia and soundings indicate some low stratus may push in from New Brunswick across eastern areas toward morning. The clouds will linger through much of Friday but may thin out a bit in response to subsidence under the surface high which will still be ridging across the area. This will leave eastern areas partly to mostly cloudy with partial sunshine in the west. Temperatures will be near normal with low 70s north and middle 70s south for highs. && Short term /Friday night through Sunday/... a weak cold front will approach Friday night and move across the area on Saturday possibly bringing some light sprinkles to the region. The airmass...however...will remain warm with highs a couple degrees above normal. An upper level trough of low pressure dropping down from the north will slide across the area on Sunday. This will bring variable cloudiness and the chance for some light showers. The airmass within this trough is not very chilly and highs should be near normal north and above normal downeast as this trough slides through. && Long term /Sunday night through Thursday/... the upper level trough moves away from the area Sunday night and allows high pressure to dominate weather across the region into Thursday. A cold front approaches the northwestern parts of the region later Thursday. && Aviation /18z Thursday through Tuesday/... conditions are expected to drop to IFR late tonight into early Friday morning in response to some low stratus backing in from the east. VFR conditions are then likely later Friday through the weekend. && Marine... winds and seas are expected to be below Small Craft Advisory through the coming weekend. However...a strengthening gradient between low pressure over the Maritimes and high pressure to the west will result in north to northwest winds near 15 knots late Sunday into Monday. && Car watches/warnings/advisories... ME...none. Marine...none. && $$ Near term...Bloomer short term...Bloomer long term...mwalker aviation...Bloomer marine...Bloomer/Bloomer
