NWS Forecaster Discussion
097 fxus61 kgyx 030132 afdgyx Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 832 PM EST Tuesday Dec 2 2008 Synopsis... a ridge of high pressure will move across the northeast tonight then slide off the coast Wednesday and Wednesday night. A cold front will move southeast across the region and off the coast late Thursday. High pressure will build in from the west Friday then move offshore Saturday. Low pressure will move northeast well off the coast while a trough of low pressure crosses New England Sunday and Sunday night. The trough will intensify into a low pressure system off the coast on Monday then track to the east Monday night as high pressure builds in from the west. Low pressure will move in from the west on Tuesday bringing a chance of precipitation. && Near term /until 8 am Wednesday morning/... weak surface trough will quickly push east of the forecast area early this evening followed by a ridge of high pressure. Clouds associated with this feature will clear this evening downwind of the mountains. In the north clouds will linger along with just a slight chance of a snow shower this evening with clearing towards morning. 830 PM update...mostly clear skies over southern/coastal sections with clouds still evident over northern/mountain sections. Winds have gone slack since sunset. Will update zones to adjust some cloud conditions with no other changes anticipated at this time. && Short term /8 am Wednesday morning through 6 PM Wednesday/... Wednesday looking quite nice as high pressure pushes offshore and return flow brings warmer air back into the region under mostly sunny skies. Have gone a few degrees above mav numbers which look a little low considering 850 temperatures at 18z. Expect just a few high clouds to spill into the region in the afternoon. && Long term /Wednesday night through Tuesday/... a ridge of high pressure will move off the coast Wednesday night as warm air continues to surge into the NE on a SW flow. A cold fnt will move southeast across the region and off the coast late Thursday. This will bring some -shra to the region during the day Thursday. Much colder air will move in on gusty northwest winds behind the fnt with upslope -shsn over the Montana zones. High pressure will build in from the west Friday then move offshore Saturday providing fair weather. Low pressure will move NE well off the coast while a trough of low pressure crosses New England Sunday and Sunday night. The offshore low is too far out to sea to impact the forecast area but the trough could kick off some -sn or -shsn. The trough will intensify into a low pressure system off the coast on Monday then track to the east Monday night. Low pressure will move east toward the region on Tuesday bringing a chance of prcp to the region Tuesday into Wednesday. && Aviation /02z Wednesday through Sunday/... short term /through Wednesday/... Short term...VFR tonight through Wednesday. Long term /Wednesday night through Sunday/...MVFR conditions possible with any -shra on Thursday across the taf sites. MVFR and possibly IFR conditions may occur on Sunday with any -shsn. && Marine... short term /through Wednesday/... Short term...continuing Small Craft Advisory for winds and seas through 700 am Wednesday but expect both to drop off after midnight. Long term /Wednesday night through Sunday/...SW winds and seas will increase to Small Craft Advisory strength with gale force gusts possible as the cold front approaches from the west late Wednesday night and Thursday. Small Craft Advisory winds should continue Thursday night and Friday in the cold air advection pattern behind the departing fnt. High pressure building in from the west will slowly cause winds and seas to drop off through Saturday. At this time the ocean low is forecast to track far enough out to sea on Sunday so that it won't impact the coastal waters. && Gyx watches/warnings/advisories... ME...none. New Hampshire...none. Marine...Small Craft Advisory until 8 am EST Wednesday for anz150>154. && $$ Synopsis... near term... short term... long term... aviation... marine...
