NWS Forecaster Discussion
841 fxus64 koun 212056 afdoun Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Norman OK 356 PM CDT Thursday Aug 21 2008 Discussion... the upper low that caused the heavy rains of the past several days is finally lifting out of the Southern Plains... but a trough remains across eastern Oklahoma. Scattered showers persist just to the east of our forecast area... but it appears that chances across our area for tonight will be minimal. Lingering moisture and the weak upper-level trough may result in a few showers/storms in our southeast counties tomorrow. Slight chances of rain will persist on and off over the weekend and into early next week as low-level moisture will still be present... and afternoon heating may generate a few showers or thunderstorms. The forecast for most of next week... especially mid-week... is very uncertain as model guidance is not very consistent... and the effects of Fay may significantly alter the eventual outcome. In any case... there will be occasional chances of rain... and roughly seasonal temperatures through the period. The GFS brings a fairly Stout cold front south into Oklahoma around day 7... Thursday... which is reflected in the numerical guidance used in this forecast. However... the ensemble members do not seem to support such an aggressive handling of the front. On the other hand... even if the front does not make it this far south... the alternative setup appears to favor northwest-flow convection... which would have essentially the same effect. So... have left the numerical guidance values as is... pending a bit more consistency in the extended forecast guidance. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
