Area forecast discussion...corrected
National Weather Service San Juan PR
642 am AST Sat Aug 30 2008

Synopsis...Tropical Storm Hanna was located near 240 miles north
of San Juan Puerto Rico early this morning...moving west at 10 knots.
Weak high pressure will briefly build into the area Sunday and
Monday. A tropical wave is expected to approach the local area
Tuesday. A series of tropical waves will move across the tropical
Atlantic for the upcoming week.

&&

Discussion...Tropical Storm Hanna continue moving west...north
of the forecast area. The cyclonic circulation associated with
this system is creating a south to southwest low level wind flow
across the local area. At the same time...the outer bands
associated with Hanna...have been producing scattered showers and
thunderstorms mainly across the Atlantic coastal waters. Some of
these showers was affecting the U.S Virgin Islands early this
morning. Hanna is expected to move west or west northwest during
the next two days. As this system move away from the local
area...winds will prevail mainly from the south and southeast...in
combination with available moisture...will enhance the development
of showers and thunderstorms mainly across the northern half of
Puerto Rico. The next week...a series of tropical waves are
located ni the tropical Atlantic. The most active one..is
currently in th far eastern Atlantic...south of the Cape Verde
Islands. This system is showing sign of organization...and further
development is possible during the next 24-48 hours.

&&

Aviation...thin bands of convection are spiraling into Tropical
Storm Hanna and a few will cross through the Leeward Islands where
airports tncm and tkpk reside. These bands are producing winds of 15
to 20 knots with gusts of an additional 10 to 15 knots in isolated
cases and lower visibilities in heavy rain. One band has already
passed tist and organized convection will only occur there later in
the day should another band form. Puerto Rico may be affected
between 12 and 16z by a band now 25 to 30 miles north of them but
aviation concerns will be more affected by the general convection
over the center of the island in the form of showers and
thunderstorms. These storms will move north as the afternoon
progresses. After 16z mountain obscurations must be expected and MVFR
conditions in heavy rain. Tjps should only experience brief MVFR
conditions...while those on the north coast may be more prolonged.
Winds will be gusty near thunderstorms. Conditions will improve
after 22z.

&&

Marine...NE to north-northeast swell are starting to arrive to our local
Atlantic waters. Seas are expected to build from 5 to 6 feet
today across the near shore Atlantic waters and local passages.
At this time...41043 buoy...located northeast of Puerto Rico is reporting
9 feet of significant wave height. The center of Tropical Storm
Hanna passed ver close to this buoy. Early this morning... the
buoy was reporting winds near 35kts from the south southwest...and
a sea level pressure of 1002 mb. Seas will begin to diminish
tonight for a more typical wave height. Small craft should
exercise caution across the offshore Atlantic waters.
