Fire Weather Warning  Statement as of 1:48 PM MST on December 2, 2008/

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 9 PM CST /8 PM MST/
this evening...

A red flag warning remains in effect until 9 PM CST /8 PM MST/
this evening.

The combination of relative humidity values dropping to between
10 and 15 percent... unseasonable warm dry air... and 20 ft winds
0f 20 mph with gusts approaching 30 mph will result in critical
fire weather conditions through early this evening.

Continue to exercise caution across the area. Avoid activities
that may produce outdoor flames or Sparks. Accidental ignitions
will still have the potential to grow rapidly into dangerous fuel
driven wildfires.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Midland/Odessa Texas
510 PM CST Tuesday Dec 2 2008

Discussion...
see latest aviation discussion below.

&&

Aviation...
VFR conditions are expected areawide through Wednesday morning.
Gusty southwest to west will diminish early this evening...
but will pick up around 03/12z or shortly thereafter. A strong
cold front will push through the area Wednesday with northerly
winds of 15 to 20kt sustained behind it. These winds will
diminish by late Wednesday afternoon.

&&

Previous discussion... /issued 331 PM CST Tuesday Dec 2 2008/

Discussion...
02/12z radiosonde observation data shows the middle and upper level flow aloft has
transitioned from northerly to northwesterly vs. Observations
from 01/12z. This transition to the flow aloft has led to an
increase in winds across West Texas and southeastern New Mexico.

Surface winds will continue to remain gusty into the early evening
across the plains as the surface trough continues to maintain a
fairly tight surface pressure gradient. Winds are expected to
decrease this evening with the onset of boundary layer cooling and
the development of a surface-based inversion. Across the mountains...
winds are expected to increase overnight as the middle-level flow
increases. Mountain sites have yet to hit high winds...but kgdp is
close as of 20z. Nam12 cross sections across the guadalupes
continue to favor high winds. In addition...model wind speeds at
700mb compared to the White Sands profiler show the models are too
low. We should see a steady increase in middle-level winds
overnight...thus the High Wind Warning for the Guadalupe and Davis
Mountains will remain intact. The current High Wind Warning was
set to expire at 03/12z and based on the latest 700mb winds
remaining strong after 12z...we have opted to extend the High Wind
Warning another 3 hours. The winds should subside after 15z as
middle-level cooling and decreasing 700mb winds spread over the area.

Temperatures will cool considerably on Wednesday compared to
Tuesday/S near record warmth. The latest short range models
continue to show the cold front moving into the region tomorrow
morning...but are now a little slower than yesterday/S models.
With this in mind...we have opted to increase a few temperatures
for areas mainly along and west of the Pecos River. Below normal
temperatures are expected across all areas on Thursday and Friday
given surface ridging and prognosticated 850mb temperatures. We should
see temperatures a little closer to normal on Saturday despite a
weak front moving into the region. We expect temperatures to warm
this weekend as split flow aloft develops over the eastern Pacific/western
U.S. Some significant model differences can be seen early next
week with the European model (ecmwf) showing an upper level trough over the
southern rockies...while the operational GFS differs with a closed
low off the coast of the Baja California peninsula. For now...we see no
reason to make significant changes to the forecast beyond this
weekend.

Fire weather...
area observations show red flag winds and relative humidity/S in place across the
guadalupes...southeastern New Mexico plains and the upper trans
Pecos. Elsewhere...rh/S are at or below 15%...but winds speeds
have yet to meet 20 miles per hour. We could still see a few more hours of
conditions favorable for increasing winds...so for now...we will
leave the red flag warning intact.
