657 fxus65 kslc 231629 afdslc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah 929 am MST Monday Nov 23 2009 Synopsis...high pressure aloft will strengthen across the region through mid-week. A Pacific storm system is expected to spread into the region late in the week into the upcoming weekend. && Discussion...storm system that affected the area yesterday has moved into western Colorado this morning as the associated cold front moves into northern Arizona. As high pressure moves into the state...skies will tend to clear quickly this afternoon. Behind the front...temperatures today will run about 5f below seasonal norms. As high pressure builds through much of the work week...there will be a strong warming trend in higher elevation temperatures...but due to developing inversions...valley temperatures should struggle to rise during the week. Models indicate that the ridge will shift east beginning late Thursday/early Friday ahead of an approaching storm system. This is expected to allow enhanced southwesterly flow to develop and help mix out valley inversions. The system is prognosticated to cross the state late Friday through Sunday. In the European model (ecmwf)...this is a grazing system for northern Utah...but in the GFS solution it is a stronger and colder system that will affect more of the state. However...neither model indicates a particularly well organized system. Gem solution shows a more organized system that digs farther south. No updates expected to the forecast this morning. && Aviation...VFR conditions expected throughout the valid taf period. There is a 20 percent chance for a ceiling around 6000 feet between 17z and 19z. Should see a switch to northwest flow between 17z and 18z...with typical southeast drainage flow setting up around 03z. && Slc watches/warnings/advisories... Utah...none.
