Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service tiyan GU
345 PM chst Friday Jul 25 2008

Synopsis...
an upper low is centered just SW of pagan island near 18n145e...
about 100 miles north of where the GFS has it. A weak surface
trough is positioned just west of the marianas. Under the
influence of these two systems...widespread cloudiness...scattered
showers and isolate thunderstorms are found across the marianas waters.
With the passage of the trough...the light east winds of this
morning have shifted to southeast.

&&

Discussion...
both the GFS and UKMET seem to be having a hard time with the
upper low...since neither model shows the activity currently
affecting the marianas. And neither model shows more than a hint
of scattered showers tonight or Sat. But the upper low is clearly a
large factor in setting off the current showers...and as it drifts
west it should continue to keep showers in the area for another 24
hours or so. In addition...another weak surface trough is due
through the marianas during the day Saturday. Thus...have decided
to keep scattered in through Sat...then isolate after. Once we get into Sunday
and beyond...it gets difficult to distinguish signal from noise in
the model output. There is a hint that scattered showers may return Sun
night and Monday with another weak trough...but will wait until Sat to
get a better look at that. In summary...not a good situation for
high-confidence forecasting.
